Emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important to be prepared. The following are some tips for dealing with emergency situations, along with who you will need to contact for help.
Allergic reactions.
An allergic reaction is a generalized response that typically happens within the first few minutes of infusion, but can happen at any time.
- Signs and symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include:
- Itching or hives
- Flushed appearance
- Shortness of breath (respiratory distress)
- Chest discomfort
- Blue skin color (cyanosis)
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
If you experience any of these signs or symptoms, stop the infusion immediately and contact your doctor.
If your doctor has ordered an epinephrine autoinjector, make sure you are familiar with how it works before an emergency arises. Read all of the instructions and contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.
Missed doses.
If you miss a dose of your medication, contact your doctor and CVS Specialty CareTeam as soon as possible for further instructions.
Power outages.
Keep a cooler on hand and keep ice packs in your freezer. If the power goes out, place your medication in the cooler, near the ice packs. Avoid putting the medication in direct contact with the ice to keep it from freezing. Remember to return your medication to the refrigerator once the power is back on.
Natural or man-made disasters.
If a disaster affects your area, you may need to evacuate your home. Keep a cooler and ice on hand to transport your medication and be sure to take all the supplies you need. You should also carry important phone numbers with you, including your doctor’s office and your CVS Specialty CareTeam. Once you’ve reached a safe location, contact your CareTeam to let them know where you’ll be and whether you need any additional supplies.
